Toyota and Nissan take different roads to Brexit
Eight months later and both Nissan and Toyota have signalled their commitment, while Honda has recently started making the new Civic and does not need to make another investment decision for several years
But the approaches to Brexit taken by Toyota and Nissan, and their negotiating strategies with the UK government, are poles apart
On Thursday Toyota announced a £240m investment into its Burnaston site in Derbyshire, backed by an investment of up to £21.3m from the government, without commenting on what specific models the plant might make
The move underlined the Japanese car company’s pledge that it would continue to manufacture in Britain even if trading conditions were to change and that it would approach Brexit with “fighting spirit”
