Tesla will Replace the Radar in Model 3, Model Y in US - Launch of 'Pure Vision Autopilot' with Cameras
Electric carmaker Tesla Inc said Tuesday that it will replace the radar sensors on Model 3 and Model Y vehicles sold in North America with cameras to better support Tesla's autopilot and a new self-propelled feature called "Full Self-". Driving "(FSD). Tesla is under pressure after a series of major accidents, including fatalities, related to the autopilot and an updated version of its FSD autonomous drive system. The cameras will be installed in production vehicles starting next month. Tesla's camera-based autonomous driving system, relies on advanced computer vision and machine learning algorithms to identify other vehicles and roadways for safe navigation All new Model S and Model X vehicles, as well as all vehicles manufactured for markets outside North America, will continue to be equipped with radars for automatic driving. Radar is generally combined with cameras and lidar for autonomous vehicles. Data collected from individual sensors is aggregated in a process known as sensor fusion. Radar sensors use radio waves and sensors to detect objects, such as other vehicles.
